Centrifugal BlastCleaning

Centrifugal blast cleaning (wheel blasting) is used in a variety of cleaning, finishing and peening operations.

Steel plates, fabricated plates, flat concrete, steel surfaces are cleaned using centrifugal blast cleaning.

Grit and shot are abrasives used in wheel blast operation.

Shot clean and break mill scale and leave a peening effect.

Grit scour and produce profile /anchor pattern

Abrasives mix (shot and grit) are used to achieve good blasting.

NACE CIP Coating Inspector Level 3 Course covers a wide variety of abrasives are used other than grit and shot .Synthetic products such as glass beads, aluminium oxide and slags.

These machines are often known as wheel abrators , consist of a conveyer system to carry items through the cabinet continuously .Abrasives fall from a hopper to a motor driven blade wheels with vanes to propel the abrasives. After cleaning the abrasives recovered and recycled .Abrasives shall be free of oil and grease.

Advantages of centrifugal blast cleaning

  • Dust and fines  are collected
  • Abrasives are easily recycled
  • Blasting  and priming is done
  • General overall economy compared to air blasting

Disadvantages of centrifugal blast cleaning

  • High initial cost of equipment
  • Equipment is complex and has high  wear  on moving parts
  • Surface contaminants may be driven into work piece
  • Difficulty in cleaning complex shapes.

Portable units

NACE CIP Coating Inspector Level 3 Course covers Small portable units to now a days available for centrifugal blast cleaning of small articles.

-Tumbling mill

-Multi table

-Plain table

-Special design for odd shaped components

NACE CIP Coating Inspector Level 3 Course covers Ferrous abrasives may leave trace amounts of metal on the substrate and should not be used on substrate where they could induce corrosion.

Eg. Iron or steel abrasive on stainless steel.

Ammeter

The quantity of abrasives being thrown by the wheel is determined with an ammeter.

Low amperage readings can signify,

  • Abrasives starved wheel.
  • A flooded or choked wheel.

The efficiency of blast wheel is based on some factors,

-Abrasive operating mix

-Size of the abrasives

-Velocity of the abrasives coming off the wheel

-Quantity and direction of thrown abrasives

-Condition of feed parts

Concentrated area of a blast is called hotspot

The equipment is shop mounted and some consider it as disadvantage that it has few moving parts and this equipment cannot be moved from one place to another.

Equipment is flowing down by force of gravity, pressure and volume of compressed air is not affected the degree of cleanliness.

A full load ammeter (connected to the motor) reading indicates the efficiency of the operation.

The abrasives shall be free from oil and grease, contaminated abrasives shall be removed.

Vial test is used to determine abrasive purity.

This method is pollution freeand dust is contained.

Surface Cleanliness standards

White metal blast cleaning    (NACE No 1 /SSPC SP 5)

After blast cleaning surface shall be free of visible oil, grease, dust dirt, mil scale, rust, coating, oxides, corrosion products and other foreign matters when viewed without magnification.

Near –white metal blast cleaning (NACE no 2 /SSPC SP 10)

After blast cleaning surface shall be free of visible oil, grease, dust dirt, mil scale, rust, coating, oxides, corrosion products and other foreign maters except random staining no more than 5 % of each unit area of 6400 mmOr 60 mm X80 mm(3 “X 3”)

Commercial blast cleaning (NACE no 3 /SSPC SP 6)

After blast cleaning surface shall be free of visible oil, grease , dust dirt mill scale , rust coating , ores , corrosion products , and other foreign matters except random staining not more than 33 % of each unit area of 6400 mm2 or 80  mm (3X 3”)

Brush off blast cleaning (NACE no 4 /SSPC SP 7)

After cleaning surface shall be free of visible oil, grease, all loose rust, loose mill scale, loose coating shall be removed .Adherent mill scale, rust and coating may be allowed.

After cleaning surface shall be free of visible oil, grease, all loose rust, loose mill scale, loose coating shall be removed .Adherent mill scale, rust and coating may be allowed.
