Environmental controls in confined space, environment should be controlled to control corrosion by reducing moisture present inside Air next to steel surface or just above the steel surface is called Boundary layer’.

High humidity promotes rapid corrosion.

The salt present inthe steel  surface also attracts moisture to boundary layer.

There are two ways to reduce relative humidity of the boundary layer,

  • Increase the surface temperature
  • Reduce moisture by dehumidification

Dehumidification.

Dehumidification is a process of removal of moisture from an enclosed space to lower the dew point temperature.

Air turns

Hot air is lighter than cold air, hot air tends to rise while cold air tends to fall (stratification).

Relative humidity

The ratio amount of water vapour present in given volume of air to the saturation value.

Warm air has ability to hold more moisture than cold air.

As the temperature increases,the air with greater capacity for moisture has a lower Relative humidity. As the temperature decreases the air has less capacity for moisture so the relative humidity increases.

Dehumidification.

Two methods of dehumidification are:

1. Refrigeration

2. Desiccation.

Refrigeration

Refrigeration to remove moisture vapour from air is a common and economical method of dehumidification. In refrigeration process ambient air circulates over a system of refrigeration coils,the air chills, reaches saturation and condensation occurs.

The air coming out will have low relative humidity and dew point. This fairly dry air is circulated in confined space and no condensation takes place on the substrate.

Desiccation

Desiccants are substances that naturally have a high affinity for water.

Desiccants are regenerated either with a heated air stream or a chemical process.
