Selection of Magnetic Particle Testing

Magnetic particle testing is an important method within the broad field of nondestructive testing. Magnetic particle testing is typically used to locate surface and near-surface discontinuities in ferromagnetic materials. When a part being inspected is magnetized, the flux flows through the part and discontinuities that lie generally transverse to the lines of flux will cause some of the flux lines to
concentrate and leave the surface of the part.

When this occurs, if finely divided ferromagnetic particles are correctly applied on the surface of the part, the particles (dry or wet) will be attracted to these leakage fields. When this occurs, an indication of the discontinuity is formed on the surface. This indication indicates the size, shape and location of the discontinuity on or near the surface.


Magnetic particle test equipment is designed to detect structural characteristics of a part. These characteristics range from simple surface discontinuities on flat surfaces to various fabrication or inservice discontinuities in complex geometries.

Advantages

The magnetic particle method is a sensitive means of locating surface cracks in ferromagnetic materials. There is little or no limitation on the size or shape of the part being inspected. Discontinuities that do not actually break through the surface are also indicated in many cases by this method, although certain limitations must be recognized and understood. Indications are created on the surface of the part at the location of the flux leakage.

These indications provide a graphic representation of the actual discontinuity. Typically, elaborate precleaning is not necessary and some discontinuities filled with foreign material can be detected. Limitations

The primary limitation of magnetic particle testing is that the test object must be ferromagnetic. Because of the relationship between the discontinuity and lines of flux, the test must be performed in two directions. Magnetic particle testing may be limited by component geometry (size, contour, surface roughness, complexity and discontinuity orientation) and undesirable internal structure characteristics
(permeability differences of joined material, pressed fit components and others). Demagnetization after the testing is often required because of future fabrication or end use. Another limitation for some components is possible overheating (introduction of large currents because of
the size of the part) or production of arc strikes on finished surfaces. For proper interpretation of indications, a final limitation is the inspector’s skill with the technique used and the inspector’s
knowledge of test object characteristics.

Test Procedures for Magnetic Particle Testing

The conduct of test operations (in-house or contracted) should be performed in accordance with specific instructions from an expert. ASNT Level 3 Magnetic Flux Leakage Course Specific instructions are typically written as a technical procedure.
In many cases, codes and specifications will require that a technical procedure be developed for each individual test. In other cases, the same procedure is used repeatedly.

Personnel Qualification and Certification

One of the most critical aspects of the test process is the qualification of testing personnel. Nondestructive testing is sometimes referred to as a special process, special in that it is difficult to determine the adequacy of a test by merely observing the process or the documentation it generates. The quality of the test largely depends on the skills and knowledge of the inspector.


The American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT) has been a world leader in the qualification and
certification of nondestructive testing personnel since the 1960s. (Qualification demonstrates that an individual has the required training, experience, knowledge and abilities; certification provides written
testimony that an individual is qualified.) By the twenty-first century, the American Society for Nondestructive Testing had instituted three avenues and four major documents for the qualification and certification of nondestructive testing personnel.
